Season Preview:

Ridley College Tigers

After a very exciting and memorable 2023 Canadian Prep School Hockey Alliance Championship the Tigers enter this season with a renewed sense of enthusiasm as they look to build on the success of last year.  The 2023-2024 Ridley team will have many new faces due to graduation and matriculation to Junior hockey, but early signs are this team will be deep and once again, fast, skilled, and hardworking.  The Tigers roster is young and diverse once again with (2) 2005 DOB, (7) 2006 DOB AND (14) 2007 DOB players from Germany, the United States, and Canada including Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Saskatchewan, and Ontario.

The National Championships are set to take place at Tiger Arena the first weekend in March when the top Independent Prep Schools in Canada will converge on the Niagara Region to showcase the top players in Canadian Prep Hockey in what will be an extremely competitive Tournament that will serve as the culmination of a very challenging schedule throughout the Canada and the U.S.

St. Lawrence University (‘94’) grad and 14th year Head Coach Mike McCourt will once again be leading the Tigers.  He will be joined on the bench by Zack Jones who returns for his 9th season, along with former Alumni Christian Girhiny class of 2016 (2nd year), Carson Edwardson class of 2017 (3rd year) and Goalie Coach Anthony Tremonte (1st year)

Rothesay Netherwood School

It is hard to believe the CPSHA is entering its third year as a league and RNS couldn’t be more excited to kick things off in Toronto September 29- October 1st at UCC! The CPSHA provides our five member schools with top notch competition against other traditional independent schools within Canada, who share similar philosophies and boarding school experiences.

The Riverhawks have added ten new faces to their roster this off-season to compliment the ten returning student-athletes from last year’s MPHL championship winning team. Our lineup is ‘East Coast Strong’ again this year with players from New Brunswick (9), Newfoundland (5), PEI (2), Nova Scotia (2) and 1 from North Carolina.

Jeff Lewis continues to lead the RNS hockey program and is entering his 11th year as head coach of the boys’ prep hockey team. Coach Lewis is excited to announce two former Riverhawks to the coaching staff this year as well. Ryan Bessey ’18 has recently graduated with his BKin and BEd and last season was a member of the national champion UNB Reds Mens hockey coaching staff. Ryan also attended RNS & played for the Riverhawks from 2015-2018. The Riverhawks are also excited to announce the addition of Kevin Gagne ’10 to the Prep Boys staff this year. Kevin attended RNS for his grade 9 & 10 years before moving on to play 5 years in the QMJHL and winning a Memorial Cup with the Saint John Sea Dogs in 2011. Kevin was also the QMJHL Defenseman of the year & first team all star in 2012-2013, before signing with the Anaheim Mighty Ducks in 2013-2014.

There is no question that this year’s rosters will have a number of players that will be of interest to Jr A programs throughout North America as well as the NCAA and Major Junior Hockey!

Stanstead College

Although in some ways it seems like the CPSHA Championships weekend at Stanstead College last March was not that long ago the start of the next CPSHA campaign is quickly approaching. The CPSHA provides us with wonderful competition against schools within Canada that share the same goal, which is using sport as part of a wonderful overall university prep education.

With a number of players from our team last year moving on to junior hockey across Canada and the United States it was a busy recruiting season once again. This year our team will return a total of 7 returning players, and an additional two players moving up from our Prep team. Our line up this year is quite geographically diverse as it includes players from across the pond (Czech Republic, Finland and Austria) as well as from many provinces and states within North America (Quebec, Ontario, Alberta, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Connecticut and Florida).

Despite being quite early in our preparation process it is clear through the first week of practice that our group has a willingness to play fast, physical and smart hockey. As a coaching staff we look forward to getting into competition and working towards meeting our goals and having a successful season within both the CPSHA and throughout the rest of our schedule in Canada and the United States.

The Spartans will once again be coached by Matt Thompson and Logan Vanasse ‘09 and we are joined this year by the return of alumni Matthew Chan ’16. James Rioux continues to lead the Stanstead College Hockey program. There is no question that this year’s rosters has a number of players that will be of interest to the NCAA and Major Junior Hockey. Looking forward to dropping the puck on the new CPSHA Season at Upper Canada College on September 29th.

Upper Canada College

UCC couldn’t be more excited about the arrival of the third season of the CPSHA. The level of hockey competition has never been higher in Canada and the members of the CPSHA continue to aim to be the driving force as prep hockey continues to grow in Canada.

The Blues have added 12 new student athletes to our roster, with the belief that this is to be an extremely deep and competitive roster that will complement our core returning players. Although last year’s team fell short of our goals, the character and competitiveness of that team laid the foundation for this team’s future success. Our new players continue the trend of hailing mainly from Ontario and Quebec and will most definitely turn some heads.

Dan Noble will be returning for his third season as Director of Hockey and Head prep coach. We also are extremely excited to announce the hiring of Brett MacLean as our assistant director of hockey and assistant prep coach. Brett had a tremendous CHL career cracking the 100 point mark twice and scoring 61 goals in his final season. He was drafted to the Arizona Coyotes but unfortunately had his pro career cut short due to a severe heart condition. Mike Clarke and Justin Baker will also be on the bench as skill and D coaches. Mike Clarke played at Elmira College and played 6 years pro and is not one of the top skill coaches in Toronto. Justin Baker played at St Lawrence University and 5 years pro.

The new season has been marked with a significant renovation to our locker room. We couldn’t be more thankful for the families that helped make this happen and proud of the alumni who helped lay the foundation for the future success of our program.

We believe that this team will live up to its expectations and that a number of our players would be great additions to any Jr or NCAA program.
